LENTEN ALMSGIVING

The three pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving, work together as a Spiritual recipe for holiness. This Lent, the Almsgiving will go to support our Sister Parish, St. Benedict Parish in Ilungu Tanzania. Almsgiving for our impoverished family in Tanzania can deepen our prayer life as we are brought into contact with our brothers and sisters who live in poverty and can give us a greater understanding of what it means to go without while fasting.
Christ directs us to care for others as if they were Jesus Himself. He tells His disciples, “Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did it for Me.” (Matthew 25:40). As Catholics, giving to our less fortunate family members in Tanzania is a spiritual discipline that we can engage in to strengthen our relationship with the Lord and with the Body of Christ.
Almsgiving is also a matter of justice. At the root of the practice of Almsgiving is the principle that “everyone should look upon his neighbor (without exception) as ‘another self’, above all bearing in mind his life and the means necessary for living it with dignity” (CCC, No. 1931). This responsibility to care for our neighbors becomes even more important when it involves those who are disadvantaged (CCC, No. 1932).
God sees all men and women as His children, equal in His eyes, and therefore deserving of fair and just treatment. Almsgiving allows justice to flourish through simple acts of love and compassion.
Will our Almsgiving really make a difference in the lives of the parishioners of St. Benedict Parish and of Stella Maris Pastorate? Pick up an informational booklet at the display tables after the weekend Masses in each Church and read about some of the fruits that have resulted from our donations to date. Besides the “before” and “after” pictures of construction projects, you will find testimonies of parishioners from St. Benedict Parish as well as Stella Maris Pastorate. These heartfelt testimonies are very poignant and moving.

This year, due to logistics, we are not collecting palms in our pastorate. Blessed palm branches should be treated with special reverence. They should either be burned with the ashes then buried or simply buried. This ensures their sacred purpose is honored and returns them to the earth in a dignified way.

Recessional Silence at Holy Mass
During Lent, at the conclusion of every Holy Mass, all are invited with the priest to kneel for a moment of silence and thanksgiving, followed by the recession done in sacred silence. All of it to give us a deeper sense of God. St. Mother Teresa once said: “We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature—trees, flowers, grass—grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence.”
Lenten Almsgiving
This year our pastorate almsgiving will support the Sister Parish in Tanzania. This Lenten Almsgiving is the only fundraiser for the Sister Parish in 2025. You may use the almsgiving box or give online here.
