LENTEN ALMSGIVING
by Sister Parish Committee
The focus of our 2025 Lenten Almsgiving is our Sister Parish, St. Benedict Parish in Ilungu, Tanzania, which was inaugurated as a Parish in 2013 and became our Sister Parish in 2017. When we give alms to our brothers and sisters at St. Benedict Parish, we are making a concrete donation of ourselves to them. The concreteness of Almsgiving is crucial. It says in crystal clear terms: “Here is what I can offer and I offer it out of love for you (and God), because I care about your welfare.”
The parishioners of St. Benedict Parish had never had a relationship with another Parish, much less a Parish 8400 miles away! It was difficult for them to grasp that we could love and care for them. But our continued support through funds, warm clothing, Religious Education materials, etc., plus a visit by a small delegation from our parish in 2019, have demonstrated our love and care for them as our family.
In addition, the Sister Parish Initiative has fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Universal Church in the parishioners of Stella Maris Pastorate. It has nurtured the virtues of empathy, compassion and solidarity, as we witness the shared joy and challenges of our Sister Parish and a greater understanding of what it means to be Catholic.
Fr. Minde, Pastor of St. Benedict Parish in Ilungu, states that our prayers and mutual support have allowed our Sister Parish to step forward in hope and strength in our Catholic Faith. Our financial support has allowed them to change the physical face of St. Benedict Parish as well as the hearts of their parishioners, who, as a result, have become more fully involved in parish life.
Stop by the Information tables after the weekend Masses in each Church, to view the display board, ask questions, pick up an informational booklet and an Almsgiving envelope, as well as an Almsgiving box if desired.

Ushers are needed at all churches to assist at weekend Masses. Ushers are urgently needed at IHM for the 7:30am and 10:30am Sunday Masses. To sign up please contact Michael Mills.
Old Palms
This year, due to logistics, we are not collecting palms in our pastorate. Blessed palm branches should be treated with special reverence. They should either be burned with the ashes then buried or simply buried. This ensures their sacred purpose is honored and returns them to the earth in a dignified way.

No Hospitality during Lent
Hospitality, with coffee and donuts will not take place during Lent. It is a way our whole pastorate can offer a sacrifice together in order to draw closer to the Lord, and to experience the Resurrection in a deeper and new way. Do not be afraid, it will return at Easter!

Recessional Silence at Holy Mass
During Lent, at the conclusion of every Holy Mass, all are invited with the priest to kneel for a moment of silence and thanksgiving, followed by the recession done in sacred silence. All of it to give us a deeper sense of God. St. Mother Teresa once said: “We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature—trees, flowers, grass—grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence.”
Lenten Almsgiving
This year our pastorate almsgiving will support the Sister Parish in Tanzania. This Lenten Almsgiving is the only fundraiser for the Sister Parish in 2025. You may use the almsgiving box or give online here.

A Lenten Retreat will be held on Saturday, Apr. 12 at IHM to prepare for the Sacred Triduum. There is no cost, all are invited! The retreat will last from 8am until 12pm and will include Adoration at 8am, Mass at 9am, social time with coffee and bagels, and a scripture study of the liturgies of Holy Week to close. Please RSVP here. RSVP is not required.
