SOCIETY of ST. VINCENT de PAUL
Paris, France; 1833
Frederic Ozanam, a devout Catholic 20-year-old student at the Sorbonne, engaged in a debate with an atheist who challenged him to show how the Church was easing the burden of the poor people who had flooded Paris in the wake of the second French revolution. Frederic, wounded by his inability to respond well, transformed the challenge into a personal commitment to serve these desperate people in need. Frederic, with five of his friends and under the guidance of Bl. Rosalie Rendu, a Daughter of Charity, began visiting poor people in their homes to offer what assistance they could. Thus was born the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the home visit.
Bl. Frederic imagined a “network of charity and social justice to circle the world”, and that “no act of charity shall be foreign to the Society.” His vision came true. By 1845, member groups called “conferences” existed in Catholic churches in Ireland, Italy, England, Belgium, Scotland, and the United States. Today the Society is the largest lay Catholic organization in the world with more than 800,000 members in 155 countries. The foundational activity of the Society remains the home visit, in which 2 members visit neighbors in need in their homes to offer what assistance they can.
Stella Maris Pastorate hosts 2 conferences, one at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and one at Christ the King Church. Members of these conferences make home visits to neighbors in need in Monona, McFarland, Cottage Grove, the south east side of Madison, and Oregon. Additionally members volunteer in a variety of activities, including the recently completed Christmas gifts (Little Drummer) program for the children of families who received a home visit in the previous year, our upcoming Recycle the Warmth blanket drive and pancake breakfast, making Easter baskets for children, serving in the SVdP - Madison Food Pantry, and more. Both conferences are eager to welcome new members to this vocation. Will that be you?

Epiphany Chalk
Take a piece of blessed chalk along with you this weekend after Holy Mass to bless your home in celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany. The tradition is to use the chalk to inscribe the initials of the three Magi (Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar), along with the numbers of the new year: 20+G+M+B+25, above your home's entrance asking for God's blessing on your home.

Through your generosity, we were able to provide gift cards and toys to a greater number of families that reached out for assistance this year. We would also like to extend our thanks to those who donated their time by collecting, organizing and distributing the gifts at The Center for Vincentian Charity. Together your thoughtfulness and generosity made Christmas special for many families. Thank you!
Also, a belated thank you to everyone that supported the SVdP clothing drive that was conducted at all Stella Maris churches in October. A total of 190 donations were received! Watch for the next clothing drive to be scheduled in the spring of 2025. Your support is greatly appreciated!
